Willingale Cricket Club
Willingale Cricket Club is a family-friendly club who are members of the Herts and Essex Cricket League and have established a reputation for good quality village cricket, playing in a unique rural location.
As well as league cricket each Saturday throughout the summer months (May-August), the village also fields a Sunday side that plays friendly matches against other village clubs during the season.
In 2017 – the club’s 25th season in the Herts and Essex Cricket League – Willingale Cricket Club finished fifth (out of 10) in the third division, winning eight matches, losing eight matches, with two no results due to bad weather. Jon Airey (39 wickets) was the league’s top wicket-taker while James Welshman (452 runs) was the club’s top run scorer.
Willingale’s Sunday side enjoyed a strong season, winning six matches from nine, with two defeats and a no result.
After a successful four-year stint as captain of the Saturday side, club stalwart Paul King will step aside as captain of the Saturday side for 2018, with batsman Steve Stammers taking over the reins. The ageless Jon Read will be vice-captain.
At October’s AGM it was confirmed that Bernard Living would continue as President of Willingale Cricket Club, Steve Corner as Chairman and newly-appointed Club Captain, Stuart Elswood as Treasurer and Geoff Hayter as Club Secretary.
We are actively recruiting new adult and junior players for both Saturday League cricket and for Sunday friendly matches. If fellow villagers are keen to join please contact Steve Stammers by completing this form – we’d love nothing more than for more locals to represent this cricket club. Villagers are always welcome to spend an afternoon watching the Saturday or Saturday team during the summer at The Glebe.
